Many people think about holding a garage, yard or moving sale as a way to make money from clearing out household clutter. But very often it would be more profitable to donate that used clothing, appliances or furniture to charity. With good record keeping and the help of tax deduction software, donations to charity can result in significant tax savings without triggering an IRS audit.
Itemize Deductions to Claim the Charitable Donation Tax Deduction
The deduction for charitable donations is taken on Form 1040 Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. The deduction cannot be taken without itemizing deductions on Schedule A. It makes sense to use Schedule A if the total of all itemized deductions will be more than the standard deduction.
If the total of all charitable donations exceeds $500, the donations must also be detailed on Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions.
General Rules for Claiming the Deduction for Donations to Charity
In order to qualify for the deduction, items must be donated to a tax-qualified charitable organization. Look for the 501(c)(3) designation or consult IRS Publication 78 to verify the status of a non-profit organization.
The items donated must be in at least good condition to qualify for the deduction. Items in poor condition do not qualify.
The deduction should be taken for the year in which the donation was made. Generally, the deduction is limited to 50% of adjusted gross income, although stricter limits apply in some situations. IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions, explains these limits.
Determine Fair Market Value of Items Donated to Charity
Fair market value is the amount that must be used to determine how much can be deducted for a donation. The greatest tax savings is realized by assigning a fair market value to each individual item donated rather than to a group of items, like a bag full of clothes for example.
For new, unused items the purchase price may be used. For used items, fair market value is the price an item would sell for in a thrift store. The original price of a used item has no bearing on its fair market value, therefore a used handbag from Target will have the same fair market value as a handbag from Coach. A total donation of $5,000 or more requires a qualified appraisal. See IRS Publication 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property for details.

The actual tax deduction received is a percentage of the total fair market value of all the items donated. A person in the 28% tax bracket with a donation valued at $100 will earn a deduction of $28.

Tax Deduction Software to Determine Fair Market Value
Several online tax applications are available to help keep track of donations throughout the year and determine fair market value:
TurboTax ItsDeductible Online
H&R Block Deduction Pro
As an example of how much can be earned using software to determine fair market value, here are a few values as listed in the 2009 edition of TurboTax ItsDeductible for medium value items:
Woman’s t-shirt: $4.00
Table lamp: $25.00
Adult-sized leather sandals: $10.00
Avoid IRS Audit with Good Record Keeping of Donations
When claiming a tax deduction for donations to charity it is vital to keep good, detailed records in case the IRS has questions about the donations. Always get a signed and dated receipt from the charity when making a donation and keep the receipt on file with the tax return for that year.
Whether or not the software is used to track donations, a list must be kept on file of all the items included in each donation. For each item, keep track of:
Description of the item (ex. woman’s t-shirt)
Number of items donated
Condition of the items (good vs. excellent)
The fair market value of each item
How to value was calculated (if not via software)
For more expensive items such as large furniture or appliances, additional details such as a picture of the item, date purchased and original price may also be helpful.
Taking the charitable donation tax deduction requires some effort to document the items included in the donation and determine fair market value. But the work is minimal compared to setting up a garage, yard or moving sale while the benefit could be substantial.
